Sometimes, you cannot open the door. It gets stuck. You cannot open the window also. You become sad. But, no need to worry as you can fix the doors and the windows of your house. This solves your problem for future. Doors and windows usually get stuck due to jamming.
Stuck windows - Windows stick for many reasons. The wood expands and contracts. The moving parts are painted. The surfaces seem to be jammed together.
Some common problems and their solutions
Painted over joint—Cut paint with a putty knife. Hold the blade against sash. Hold it flat. Now, push edge into joint. Draw tool along the surface.
Paint build up—Excess painting over the years causes friction. Paint scrapper removes extra paint from window stop, parting trip, and blind stop. Move the sash upward and downward. For lower sash, scrap the edges. If you do not achieve success, remove both the sashes. Strip the paint to bare wood. Repaint sashes. Now reinstall when the paint dries.
Too much friction - Lubricate sash channels with candle wax or talcum powder. This does not allow the painted surfaces to jam together. You can find weather stripping in sash channels. Use hammer or block of wood to make the strip flat.
Just plain stuck — A sharp rap breaks the bond between the painted surfaces. You can check the blow by the palm of your hand. You can also tap the sides of wooden block to the sides of the sash.
New friction channels - Friction channels prevent heat loss. Remove sashes, weights, and pulleys. Put fiberglass insulation into weight cavities. Start from the top, and work with a flexible stick or rod. Notch the ends of top using hammer or sharp chisel. Replace sashes between new channels. Tilt complete assembly into opening from lower side. Now, reinstall interior stops.
Stuck doors — Door rubs against jamb. You have to see which side the door is rubbing against jamb. Remove the hinges out, if the door is rubbing against them. Remove hinge from jamb. Now, place a piece of cardboard behind it. Put scribe lines on the door. Now, put door on the plane surface. And then make its edges smooth.
Loose hinge screws - Open the door, and remove screws. Fold back the hinge. Do not misplace any existing shims. Fit the holes by wood pieces. Scrap wood plugs, and drill pilot holes.
Moving a stop — you should move the stop to open the door.
Moving a strike plate - It helps in getting the latch of the door to the proper position.
Stuck windows and doors are a problem. But, such problems are solved easily. If you are not expert, consult a plumber.
