It is a wise saying that you should not not put down your sink. Many things go down the drain. You should clean it. If you do not clean it the sink will get clogged. As a responsible home owner you have to maintain the sink and drain. Lets take a second look at the basics.

Food You should not rinse certain foods down the sink if you do not have a garbage disposal. They can create troublesome blockages. Examples of such food items are pop corn kernels, vegetable and fruit peelings, pasta shells and bread and butter. These foods can block your drain. They can obstruct your sink and prevent complete drainage. Breads and butter are dangerous things to put into the drain.. Mixed together they form a strange mixture and stick to the sides and the bottom of your plumbing lines.
Grease Any type of grease whether hot or cold will cause drain blockage. Grease does not go down the drain and sticks to the sides of the plumbing. It gets The grease thickens as it passes through cooler lines underneath the sink. In order to dispose of grease, cool it in a fridge, pack it in an airtight bag and dispose it off in the garbage.
Detergents: You should use dish washing liquid that is made for sinks. Car and other types of will simply clog the sink. If you do use other types of detergents, use them sparingly.
Pesticides: You should not wash toxic pesticides down your sink. When mixed with water, pesticides tend to eat the sink lines. Dispose off toxins and pesticides properly.
Calcium chlorate and lime: There are many products meant for cleaning sinks which contain these chemicals. These products are meant to reduce odor. Do not use these products in excess as they tend to harden and create blockages in the sink's line.
Do not put the powdered form in the sink. This can create a secondary plug in the sink lines.
Oil and hair are other substances which block sinks and drains. Dispose them off in the garbage instead of washing them down the sink.
